Common questions

How is take-home pay calculated in the UK for 2026/27?

Take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments and any salary sacrifice. In 2026/27 the first £12,570 is tax-free, then income tax is 20%, 40% and 45% (six bands in Scotland), and employee NI is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above.

Why does my payslip differ from other calculators?

Most calculators work out National Insurance and student loans on your annual salary, but payroll works them out on each payday separately. In a bonus month that changes the answer. This calculator does it per payday, and it also reads your actual tax code, including K codes and emergency codes.

Does this calculator handle salary sacrifice and electric company cars?

Yes. It handles pension salary sacrifice, net pay and relief at source schemes, electric and hybrid cars on salary sacrifice with the 2026/27 benefit-in-kind rates, and other schemes such as cycle to work. It shows what each one really costs after tax and NI.

Can I include freelance, rental or dividend income?

Yes. Add self-employed income, rent, dividends, savings interest or other untaxed income and the calculator shows your whole position, including the Self Assessment bill, Class 4 NI and any payments on account.

Is my data stored?

Your figures are saved in your own browser so they are there next time. They are only sent anywhere if you use the AI assistant, which receives your current figures to answer your question. If you allow it, Google Analytics counts visits, and it never receives your figures.

How up to date are the figures?

The rates were last checked against HMRC, the Scottish Government and the Student Loans Company on 6 October 2026. They are updated every April and after every Budget.
